The 1949 Clarksville Colts Team Photo
Mar 9th, 2007 by admin
Special thanks goes out to Kevin McCann for providing us with this wonderful photo of the 1949 Clarksville Colts Team Photo. Kevin explained to us in an email that this is the only team picture he has of the Colts.
Kevin further explains, “the ‘49 club finished in 7th place (next-to-last) with a 40-85 record. During the winter, Hod Lisenbee (who owned the team as well as being a player/manager) sold the club –player contracts, uniforms, and equipment — to a group in Jackson, TN. They were renamed the Jackson Generals. In the photo, Lisenbee is sitting front and center. Billy Herman Jr. (middle row, third from right) was the son of Hall of Famer Billy Herman and started three two triple plays in consecutive games (May 4-5). At the time it was believed to be a pro baseball record. The Colts played at Goodrich Field, which I believe was on the grounds of the B.F. Goodrich plant. (It was their company softball field.)”
More about Kevin McCann: “A native of Jackson, Tennessee, I became interested in the history of the Jackson Generals and minor league baseball in my hometown. The result was a book entitled Jackson Diamonds: Professional Baseball in Jackson, Tennessee, which I self-published in 1999.”
